Frequently Asked Questions: Have a Question? Email us and we will post the answer below. What conditions can chiropractic treat? Our chiropractors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of any joint, muscle, ligament, or tendon injury. How long is each visit? Your initial visit will be 45-60 minutes and will include a comprehensive history, physical exam, treatment, and advice for home care or exercise. Follow-up visits are approximately 15-20 minutes. What causes back pain? Approximately 80% of Americans will have a significant back injury at some time. Although common and often very painful and limiting, most back pain does not indicate a serious medical problem and can often be treated successfully without using medication or surgery. The best advice is to stay active, as most episodes will resolve within 2-4 weeks. A thorough examination will determine the cause of your symptoms and guide the most appropriate therapy for your pain relief and recovery. Once I begin chiropractic care, will I have to keep coming back? No. The main purpose of our treatment is to reduce or eliminate your pain, restore your function, and teach you how to be independent from care with exercise. The reason many patients return for care is they have a re-injury, want to change their exercise program, are looking to improve their performance in athletics, or are happy with the care they receive and want to continue on a maintenance basis to prevent future problems. Will I be given exercise? Most experts agree that exercise is essential for your recovery from any joint injury including the spine. Our doctors have the highest levels of certification in rehabilitation, orthopedics, and sports injuries and can develop an individualized exercise program that is safe and effective for your return to work, daily activity, or sports. I have sciatica and a disc herination. Do I need surgery? Fortunately, more than 95% of disc herniations diagnosed on MRI do not require surgery and can be treated with conservative care. We offer the most effective therapy and exercise techniques for disc pain and sciatica that can reduce your pain and improve function. However, if your pain remains intense, is not responding to care, or if you have evidence of nerve damage (muscle weakness, reflex loss, numbness) we will make the appropriate referral for more invasive treatment. In the absence of nerve damage, the outcome of spine surgery for disc herniation is the same as the outcome for conservative care at 5 years post-op. Are manipulations/adjustments a necessary part of my care? Chiropractic manipulation is an incredibly safe and painless procedure but is not required for every condition. After a thorough exam, we will determine if manipulation is best for you or if another technique will be more effective. Chiropractors are well known for "cracking" or "adjusting" the spine but this by no means the only treatment we offer. Modern chiropractic combines manipulation, muscle care, stretching, rehabilitative exercise, nutritional counseling, and movement therapies to effectively treat any joint injury. Can you treat TMJ? TMJ pain is commonly treated in our clinic and therapy to the jaw and neck muscles can often resolve this complaint. Also, rehabilitative exercise of the neck muscles, jaw muscles, and posture system can be effective in controlling your pain. My child's backpack seems very heavy. Can it cause back pain? There is quality medical evidence to suggest that heavy backpacks can result in adolescent back pain and may impact the future health of your child's spine. Backpacks should not exceed 15% of your child's body weight and should be worn higher on the back using both straps at all times. Back pain that persists in children should be evaluated by a professional.
